Our Story

From Tiny Shelters to Tiny Homes

Now that the Tiny Shelters are in place, we’re in the process of completing our new Tiny Homes. Located adjacent to the Tiny
Shelters, these small homes are
slightly larger, have additional amenities, and are being built to provide transitional housing for the men and women who have graduated from our programs.

Just what they need…

Thanks to the generosity of friends like you, in 2022 we were blessed to open the David L. Miller Memorial Village, which houses our Tiny Shelters program, providing up to 90-days of emergency shelter designed for homeless individuals who may not be suitable for other Faith Mission of Michiana emergency housing or program options. Now, we’re in the process of providing even more with our Tiny Homes, which will give them additional space and amenities.

The small homes are built to provide transitional housing with a bed, chair, toilet, storage space, sink and additional amenities.

A communal building offers laundry and shower facilities for village residents

Individuals can be referred by the Elkhart Homeless Coalition, Region 2 Homeless Coalition, the VA, or other partner agencies.

These agencies provide oversight for compliance with care goals and housing rules.

There is a $100 per month program fee per unit to help cover utilities cost. Shelters are available on a first come, first served basis.

David L. Miller Memorial Village

Tiny shelters offer individuals a short-term respite from homelessness and an entry to Faith Mission of Michiana’s support programs.

In 2019, the Board and Staff of Faith Mission of Michiana decided to follow a national trend in homeless triage by providing Low Barrier Shelter which, by definition, is shelter based on the primary needs of an individual. Partnering with those in the Elkhart Homeless Coalition, we found that locally we have the same issues and needs of those nationally. Even though Faith Mission of Michiana houses over 700 homeless individuals a year, there is still a gap in the offerings for those in need of Emergency Shelter.

The Low Barrier Shelter program is designed for men and women who need emergency shelter but cannot function in a normal shelter environment due to addiction issues, mental health, veterans who are struggling to acclimate back into society.

In the population of homeless individuals who stay in the Mission’s Low Barrier shelter, there is still a need for emergency housing for individuals unable to live in a communal environment. Hence, the need for tiny shelters. A separate building will house showers and laundry for all tiny shelter residents.
